While “mistake” may sound synonymously close to miss take, miss stake or mystic, none of these are closely related in meaning.  Sounding alike may confuse meaning, but it would be a mistake to believe they are remotely related.  After all, shellfish and selfish may sound similar, but it would be a mistake to confuse their two-letter difference.

Mystique, my 40 foot catamaran, has certainly missed stakes and takes in its 10 years sailing the Caribbean and Bahamas. Though my boat has its share of flaws, it is also void of many of them.  It was, after all, a well-designed, constructed and maintained by skilled craftsmen and mechanics.  No matter how she sails as a sailboat, she does not make errors. Steering, navigating, judging and assessing situations are human attributes. Errors are reserved for humans.  

While Mystique was tied up at Crampton Park Marina's fuel dock, I thought I was refueling the port diesel tank, but instead inadvertently I overfilled the engine room. The fuel line had separated from the tank.  But I did not realize the mistake until after the fuel had flooded the engine room. 

I called BoatUS to see if they could help.  I was informed Mystique's situation and my mistake were not covered by my Gold membership because I was tied to a dock. If I had been in distress and not at a dock, my situation would have been deemed "distress" and covered. Apparently, accidents in their world only are covered if a boater is a distance from their definition of safety are I asked the captain who responded to our call "What percentage of your calls are human error?"...without hesitation his response was 100%.

Thank goodness for Mikiel and Gil who offered to come aboard Mystique to help suck my excess fueling mistake. They were amazing in offering their assistance without hesitation.

While we missed our weather window departure, we realized more about the boat that needed our attention in the extra week the mistake gave us.
