Weighing the Coast Guard

Weighing the Coast Guard

When the  Coast Guard and a major East coast seaside / port city essentially endorse a speed boat racing event because millions of dollars have been spent to resuscitate and revitalize a so called “sporting” event that died decadesI ago. I know I may be biased towards supporting nature, marine welfare and boater rights, but when our nation’s Coast Guard promotes and protects powerboat racing over environmental and humanitarian concerns we are insane. When humanity is guarded by moneyed -interests, they are only protecting their invested interests. For them to even consider this event as viable is troubling. I think the write-up not only reflects but exposes our county’s misplaced values and priorities.

It doesn't surprise me anymore when the Coast Guard maps out sea as if it were land and then label them as such and such in the name of safety. The problem with this approach is that water and land are different. It is like saying fish and wildlife will be protected by these artificial zones.  Informing fish and birds of human desires to sponsor a powerboat race in and around environmentally sensitive areas only highlights how insensitive unconscious they are.

A neighborly fellow boater in Miami recently sent me the linked newspaper article below.  After reading it, I almost felt sick to my stomach:

Coast Guard weighs regulations for boat race at Miami Marine Stadium

As the newspaper article encouraged public reponses, I submitted the following in response:

"Please do not hold this event. This proposal is neither a community need, a rowing club want, any sailboaters’ desire and certainly not satisfying any environmentalist benefit. It does nothing other than give some some cheap entertainment at the expense of innocent bystanders.

So its value is at best limited and its benefit almost non-existant. If this is a money-making venture, it does not consider the impact on people, water and wildlife.

Anyone living on his or her boat in the Marine Stadium anchorage would likely not favor this idea. How could they? The event would bring noise, traffic, potential danger, disruption and turbulence to a relatively tranquil sanctuary.

Who protects the Manatees - the gentle giants and sea life? Who protects the sea life from humanity?  fishermen? boaters? speed boats? jet skiers? marine police?  Coast Guard?  environmentalists? nautical nice guys?

The Miami Boat Show in Marine Stadium was just one example how the anchorage disturbed and disrupted became by motor boats. While the boat show was relatively calm with the addition of pilings, barges, docks, cranes and huge expensive luxury yachts as compared to your proposed races.  Of course, no mention of potential fuel spills, noise pollution, environment impact, impact on manatee and fish populations, The promises and declarations about safety and not disturbing the environment or affecting the sea life are delusional.

Nothing about the impact, expense, and effort this event would have on boat owners moving their vessels to another location. Nothing about recommending boats re-anchoring safely somewhere else. Could it be they didn’t consider these boaters or that there are few nearby safe places. Maybe using this racing as a reason to encourage this boating community to move somewhere else? All possible motives.

Since I moved to Marine Stadium area on my boat, this is the first year boaters have been ushered out three times. Since the stadium's original purpose died a number of years ago, the waters have been redefined by boaters, rowers, birds, manatees and sea life….they have all been allowed to inhabit these waters. Yes, this area has occasionally been used as a recreation spot, but never before have boaters been told to move away.

For most of the last three years I have lived on this body of water without much human threat. Except for the occasional weekend booze cruises or erratic jet skiers, the water has been a calm and peaceful rowers' paradise.  For the Coast Guard to alter this area for some promotional and profitable venture is both unconscionable as well as irresponsible - They might as well advertise Let’s alter a tranquil body of water for the soulless purpose of racing powerboats and jet skis. Let’s not bother to consider any impact on wild life, rowers, seawater or live-a-board populations.

This potential disturbance will affect the quality not only the wildlife above and below the surface,  The noise alone will challenge any sensitivity.  As a boat owner anchored in the anchorage, I feel this powerboat event does nothing to preserve the integrity of this body of water."

I know the Coast Guard performs many heroic and noble functions, but it is difficult to comprehend how their leaders believe a powerboat race is somehow a higher priority than protecting America's precious and vulnerable resources - our coastal waters. Then again money matters to many more than the sanctity (sounds like "sank the city"?) of water water. How about "sea water" ("see water"!!!)...it's polluted and muddy like our minds!

It is obvious to many of us who live and breath the sea that the Coast Guard's mission         isn't really guard our marine life or protect humanity.  It is used to protect us from ourselves.  It may profess "for your safety", but it is really about protecting our system. One might even say "it's all about control."

Of course, like any intelligent and aware indidivuals who know no one can not control tides, waves, wind, weather or Nature or thought. Try as they might to control the sea of humanity  Could bringing entertainment to the multitude masses endorse their image in the public eye? Could it be that minds of coastal protection leadership be so watered by dollar signs, they forget their mission and sell their soul to the devil?  What happens when leadership values profits and personal benefits over humanity and Nature? Ah, I venture to guess it is not too far to surmise the people aren't safe from those who proclaim they risk life and limb to serve. Maybe they find bullshit tasty.
